Debonair Dyke

Danson O’Brian, renowned writer and gender educator, is recognized as the most eligible lesbian in New York. Strong, confident, sexy, she embodies gender queer in a dramatic fashion. She loves her life, loves her women, and really, truly loves the excitement of the city. However, life hasn’t always been so perfect.

Growing up in Kansas, Danson always felt like an outsider, preferring cars to dolls and, as a teen, rebuilding car engines was more her thing than a day at the mall. She never fit in.

After her father experiences a stroke, she is needed to keep the family business going until he recovers. She doesn’t think twice about boarding the bus, but even though she has changed, the people in town haven’t.

Jessica Morrison, the “town whore” and the sexiest woman Danni’s ever seen, may be her only salvation, especially when she learns Jessica secretly likes girls and might be interested in a few secret rendezvous. Except Danni gave up keeping secrets long ago, and she isn’t about to go back in the closet now.

This read was a different kind of f/f novel. It isn't strictly a lesbian novel, but more leaning into the area of transgender issues. To be honest, this is the first book I have ever read where the female lead, Danni, sports a strap on and is almost a stone butch type character. She holds off the advances of her conquests, preferring to be the one taking the lead and doing the lovemaking. Her strap on is practically a living thing and at times I found myself flummoxed by Danni's guy like response to the women around her. As Danni goes back to the small town that held her back as a girl growing up different than the rest, she has to decide what to do-let the small town way of thinking back in, or stand up for her values and be the woman she has become. It is a journey that has a rather unconventional love story, but one that I found myself warming to page after page. Love is love, no matter the label. Transgender may be difficult for some people to understand at times, but as I read, I found myself hurting for Danni and the isolation she felt. The chance of real love doesn't show its face often and I cheered for her when it arrived.

This was a very enjoyable and unique read and I am looking forward to more books by this talented author.
